On Facebook they have different "debate" topics on different issues, and I ran into "Would a female president be as effective as a male president" sponsored by ABC as a topic. It totally makes me sick that they can even ask that question and it can be interpreted by some as a valid issue. They would never openly debate, "would a black president be as effective as a male president" or "would a Mormon president be as effective as a WASP president" or "would a cross-dressing president be as effective as a gender-consistent-dressing president". Notably, many, many more males responded with "no" than females, using absolutely horrendous reasoning skills ("if you take their periods into account then we'll be dropping atomics bombs once a month!!!!" or "they just wouldn't be able to garner the respect from all the sexists in the world (but I'm not one of them, I SWEAR)!!!!"). I hate people.

And then there are the people who answered "yes" but then said "but NOT Hills". Like somehow they're hiding their sexism by purporting to actually have weighed the issues. I call bullshit. She's honestly not a whole lot different than the other candidates. She's just one of the bunch, really, playing politics like the game that it is...just like everyone else she's' up against.

She's the only female that, in my opinion, it would be POSSIBLE to elect in the U.S. given her, you know, 8 years of experience being the closest adviser to the most popular president of our time. Not to mention the fact that Bills (like that?) would be an equal adviser to her if she were elected.

Yet again a woman who is more than qualified than the competition but will have an uphill battle the entire way. Well she has my fucking vote. The same way she will bring out thousands of men to vote against her gender, I will be there to vote for it.

I would also vote for Clinton just because I'd like to see a woman in office. All those people who think a woman can't do it, I want them to eat their words.

I'm so scared that they will never eat their words. With every news outlet in the country and every anxious male on the planet holding her presidency to a microscope, I wonder if it's even possible that she be viewed as competent, however brilliant she is. I just get so damn angry.

Argh. That's really all I can say. How do you argue with people who honestly think that it's okay to question a person's ability to be president (or anything besides a sperm donor, for that matter) based solely on their lack of a penis (or possession of a uterus)?

I think it's ridiculous that we have yet to have a female president, seeing that females make up over half of this country's population. Of course, competency doesn't matter - I mean, look at our current president. Jesus fuckin' Christ.

I'm glad Hills is qualified, but it kind of scares me that so many people are willing to vote for a person just because she's a woman. I also think that this is about our only shot (at least within our lifetime) of seeing a woman in office - not many other women are as experienced or talented)

I've heard the lamest jokes, too. Like who will be keeping a tight grip on national security because you know at least once a month we'll be threatening a nuclear attack ... or something equally retarded. Besides, I'm guessing Hills is past that stage and probably doesn't need to deal with it anymore.

Yesterday, my dad said at this point Hillary has his vote. I wasn't too surprised, because he liked (and still likes, I think) Bill. Hillary has my vote too, but not because she's a woman -- because she wants to give me health care.

I posted this in writer pal Maia's blog -- she has a feature called Thursdays with Hillary -- but I think it would be appropriate to re-post here:

This is what I learned about Hillary yesterday -- direct quote -- from one of my students, whose conversation I was listening in on as I pretended to grade papers:

"Do you know what Hillary Clinton wants to do? She wants to force the government to take kids away from their parents so they can be literally raised in day care. Parents don't have a choice about it."

Also: Even Pakistan has had a female president. I say, if Pakistan -- a country much more blatantly sexist than us -- is OK with it, what the hell is our problem?

Also, universal healthcare means Hillary Clinton will personally force you to go to the doctor, even if you don't want to. Maybe you need to start your kids off with a dictionary, Sig.

If Hillary wins the candidacy, we'll have to face a lot of this bs. Those comments about her hormonal cycle (which is probably done by now) are so childish. Anybody that really believes that is stupid and anyone that is just trying to make a joke is pathetic.

I also see comments about how stupid it would look in the history books to see "Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton" as a list of presidents. My ex had the same comment. My opinion is that is the weakest and dumbest reason to not support a candidate.

If Hillary wins the primaries, I'll vote for her, but I know too many liberal men who say "she's too conservative", so they won't vote for her. They won't vote for a republican, but they will probably vote for a third party candidate. Potentially enough to be a spoiler. Frankly, I agree that Hillary is too conservative for me, but I'm not an idiot. I think a lot of these liberal men are using the "she's too conservative" as code for "I ain't votin' for no wimin preseedent."

Personally, however, I like John Edwards. I think he has a much better understanding of what the role of government should be in regards to the economy and big business.

I also think (hope?) that Clinton is more liberal than she is allowed lead on. As conservatives have been fighting tooth and nail to associate "liberal" with "female" and, therefore, "horrible", she might feel like she needs to come off as more conservative just to attract a few more somewhat-less-anxious dude votes.

Is it possible for us to propose debate topics? If so, I say go ahead and propose the topic asking if Barak Obama would be a good president as a non-white person. Then when people call racism, refer them to the Hillary debate.

I saw your Facebook comment on the "debate", Urs. Awesome :)
